Lessons From Four Seasons
KEEPING BRANDS RELEVANT
Featuring:
Ben Hallam – SVP, Global Marketing, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts
Echo Mah – VP, Global Brand Creative, Four Seasons
In conversation with Alessandro Cannatà – Chair of Luxury and Brand Management, SCAD
I recently had the opportunity to attend a conversation exploring how luxury brands can remain relevant in an increasingly dynamic and culturally fluid market. What made this discussion particularly compelling was the clarity with which the speakers addressed a challenge that many heritage brands face: how to evolve meaningfully without compromising identity.
Throughout the session, Ben Hallam and Echo Mah emphasized that relevance in luxury is not achieved by reacting quickly, but by responding thoughtfully. In an era shaped by digital acceleration, shifting consumer expectations, and cultural immediacy, the temptation to chase visibility or short-term traction is high. However, they reinforced that sustained brand equity comes from disciplined stewardship of brand DNA.
The discussion also underscored the importance of viewing the customer relationship as long-term and lifecycle-driven rather than transactional. Relevance stems from understanding when and how consumers engage with the brand across different life stages and designing experiences that feel both consistent and elevated.
As an aspiring luxury brand strategist, this conversation strengthened my understanding that enduring relevance requires restraint, clarity, and strategic patience. It reaffirmed that the most powerful brands do not chase the moment, they shape it.
MY TAKEAWAYS
-
Design around the full customer lifecycle, not single transactions.
-
Partnerships must reinforce positioning, not dilute it.
-
Long-term equity outweighs short-term visibility.
